What is a Self Managed Superannuation Fund?

A Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) is a financial retirement vehicle which enables members to decide on their investment strategies and control their assets.

The sole purpose of an SMSF is to provide superannuation benefits for its members (maximum of four) when they retire. For this reason, anyone related to an SMSF must not use its assets.

At the very least, an SMSF needs to have a Trust Deed, a Trustee Declaration, assets and registration through the Australian Business Register.

But more than this, your SMSF needs to be set correctly set up so as to be eligible for tax concessions, receive contributions and be easy to administer.

Only then can your SMSF be in a position to maximise the retirement benefits to their members.

Administration and maximising the benefits of an SMSF

If you have an SMSF, or are contemplating establishing one, there are likely to be a lot of questions you need answered and other issues for consideration. Some of those are:

  • Is an SMSF right for me?
  • What assets can the SMSF buy?
  • Can the SMSF borrow money to purchase assets?
  • What are the compliance issues for a SMSF?
  • How can I maximize the benefits of a SMSF?

The rules surrounding SMSFs are complex and it can be a difficult task to administer and maximise the benefits of having a SMSF.

For example, there are compulsory audit requirements and there are many compliance issues relating to fund investments, the structure of contributions that the fund receives and the payments that the fund can make. Also, it is often difficult to determine the best use of fund assets.

When members realise that managing an SMSF is a considerable responsibility, requiring meticulous attention to detail and an understanding of superannuation law and practice they often enlist the help of SMSF administrator firms.

Burford Partners Count Financial advisers can help members manage their funds properly. We routinely advise members on the most effective use of fund assets, how best to structure contributions and manage pensions, as well as helping with investment management and rollovers.

Our investment services include investment advice, transaction administration and research.
